This exhibition aims to uncover the power within the mundane. What significance do the ordinary objects around you hold? Perhaps they lead double lives - hiding secrets, invoking memories, or acting as relics. Consumerism, attachment, and the domestic space are also possible subjects to explore. For this show, Embark is seeking artworks that somehow turn the ordinary into the unexpected or highlights the power of the mundane. As always, please make sure to include in your artist statement how, specifically, your submission relates to this prompt. Embark will consider artwork of any medium, including installation and performance.

*Applicants must be current graduate students from one of the following schools at the time of application submission: San Francisco Art Institute, UC Berkeley, California College of the Arts, Mills College, San Francisco State University, UC Davis, San Jose State University, and Stanford University.

Things are not going altogether well in the world. As such, “Backbend” is an exhibition about optimism. Inspirations may come from, for example, negative personal experiences or the political landscape, and your optimism may be a triumph of perseverance, or woefully misguided. A backbend can be either an uncomfortable strain for a body or be a symbol of play - a childlike freedom from worry. Embark is seeking artworks that somehow addresses idealism, confidence, hope, or any other connection you might make from this metaphor for optimism. As always, please make sure to include in your artist statement how, specifically, your submission relates to this prompt. Embark will consider artwork of any medium, including installation and performance.
